Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To purify a crude lactic acid by a new method that minimizes consumption of electrical energy or the quantity of chemicals, while dispensing with wastewater treatment. SOLUTION: A crude lactic acid is adjusted to a pH of 3 or lower and is subjected to reverse osmosis treatment by a membrane 1, to make the sugars transferred to a concentrated side C1 and then separated and removed, and this permeated liquid P1 is adjusted to a pH of 8-10 and is subjected to reverse osmosis treatment by a membrane 2, to obtain a permeated liquid P2, comprising mainly of low-concentration ammonia water and a concentrated liquid C2 constituted mainly of ammonium lactate. Ammonia is removed from this concentrated liquid C2, to obtain purified lactic acid. A crosslinked polyamide composite membrane is, preferably, used as the membranes 1, 2.
