Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorber for an elevator capable of freely setting the acceleration from a time when a car is collided to a time when the car is stopped and enhancing the safety of occupants by increasing impact absorbing capacity more than that of conventional shock absorbers. SOLUTION: A pit 7 is formed on the floor surface side of an elevator compartment 1. The shock absorber 8 for relieving an impact given to the floor surface of the pit 7 by the car 2 when the car 2 causes an abnormality, i.e., the car suddenly lowers due to a trouble or a natural disaster is installed on the bottom surface of the pit 7. The shock absorber 8 uses a honeycomb shock absorbing member 8a made of a metal material or a resin material and a fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) material in this embodiment. The honeycomb shock absorber 8a can be installed on at least one of the ceiling surface and the floor surface or the ceiling board 2a and the floor board of the car 2 corresponding to the ceiling surface and the floor surface.
