Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid or at least reduce such a defect that a catalytic converter suddenly deteriorates while maintaining an advantage to be achieved by cutting off the supply of fuel during engine braking operation. SOLUTION: This method comprises steps of: using a parameter showing the loadedcondition of an internal combustion engine which is operated right before reaching an engine braking operation period, as the degree of thetemperature of the catalytic converter for determining whether the degree of the temperature of the catalytic converter satisfies conditions characteristic for a high temperature of the catalytic converter; and cutting off the supply of fuel only when the conditions are not satisfied.
