Abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell making flow of reaction gas through a blocked clearance passage difficult, making generation of a gap between a seal and a gas diffusion layer difficult, enhancing sealing effect, and effectively enhancing power generation efficiency when the clearance passage short-circuiting a manifold inlet and a manifold outlet is blocked with the seal. SOLUTION: In the fuel cell comprising a polymer electrolyte membrane installed between a pair of electrodes; the gas diffusion layer arranged on both sides of the polymer electrolyte membrane; a seal member installed integrally with the gas diffusion layer in the periphery of the gas diffusion layer; and a separator in which a reaction gas induction passage passing from the manifold inlet to the outlet is installed, a thin part is formed by installing a step part in the periphery of the gas diffusion layer, an elastic material layer is installed at the corner of the step part, a projecting part is installed in the separator, the inside of the projecting part is formed in a tapered surface, and the elastic material layer is made contact with the tapered surface.
