Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To independently extract hierarchically-modulated high-priority (HP) and low-priority (LP) stream components from a hierarchically-modulated signal, to perform a soft-decision and to transmit the streams to corresponding decoders. SOLUTION: An apparatus for independent stream extraction and soft-decision of a hierarchically-modulated signal of the present invention includes: a signal synchronizing means for receiving a hierarchically-modulated signal (configured of an I-channel signal and a Q-channel signal) from an external device and performing a synchronizing process on the received signal; a signal divaricating means for divaricating the received signal (configured of the I-channel signal and the Q-channel signal) synchronized by the signal synchronizing means; an HP stream extracting and soft-decision means for extracting an HP stream from one of the signals divaricated by the signal divaricating means and performing a soft-decision; a calculation means for calculating the other of the received signals divaricated by the signal divaricating means to allow constellation points to be distinguished; and an LP stream extracting and soft-decision means for extracting an LP stream from the received signal calculated by the calculation means and performing a soft-decision.
