Abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multistage organic EL element having a charge generating layer with a two layer structure forming a p-n junction, which can be disposed without giving damage to a layer forming an organic EL unit by using a material absorbing no visible light or absorbing little visible light. SOLUTION: This organic EL element includes at least two organic EL units each containing at least a hole transport layer, an organic luminescent layer, and an electron transport layer between an anode and a cathode, and a charge generating composite layer which is the laminate of a n-type charge generating layer containing a phthalocyanine compound and a p-type charge generating layer containing a phthalocyanine compound.
