Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting reverse rotation of an internal combustion engine capable of quickly detecting the reverse rotation of the internal combustion engine without waiting for completion of one rotation of a crank shaft of the engine. SOLUTION: Reluctor passing time detection process detecting time from generation of negative pulses P11, P21 to generation of positive pulses P12, P22 by a crank angle sensor as reluctor passing time Tfr and gap between edges passing time detection process detecting time from generation of negative pulses P11, P21 to generation of next negative pulses as gap between edges passing time Tff are performed. α and β (>α) express constants, and it is determined whether a relation α×Tfr≤Tff and Tff≤β×Tfr are satisfied.
