Abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element having excellent repetition stability and high contrast by using a chargeable polymer gel which causes changes in the volume by the effect of an electric field. SOLUTION: The optical element has at least a pair of electrode substrates 2, 4 sandwiching a colored electric insulating liquid 6 having ≥103Ωcm volume resistivity and chargeable polymer gel particles 8 which absorb or release the electric insulating liquid 6 to expand or shrink by application of an electric field.
