Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new carbon material which is easily produced, and has a large specific surface area and a property that the volume of micropores, especially, micropores having diameters of ≤10 is large. SOLUTION: The carbon material is carbon particles and characterized in that the diameters of primary particles are 10-300 nm, the specific surface area is within a range of 200-1,000 m2/g, the ratio of the volume of pores having diameter of ≤20 to the volume of pores having diameters of ≤300 is ≥30% (or the ratio of the volume of pores having diameter of ≤10 to the volume of pores having diameters of ≤20 is ≥50%), and the most intensive peak is in a range of 10-18° within a range of diffraction angle of 3-30°, from the result of X-ray diffraction measurement using CuKα-ray (wavelength=1.54 ).
