Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift control device for a belt type continuously variable transmission capable of precluding a belt slip in association with a rapid change of the gear ratio effectively while the shifting performance is secured. SOLUTION: The shift control device of the belt type continuously variable transmission is equipped with a gear ratio controlling means 31 having a primary pulley 21, a secondary pulley 22, and an endless belt 23 set on the two pulleys and controlling the gear ratio, a shift speed sensing means 38 to sense the change amount per unit time of the gear ratio in the form of shift speed, and a shift speed suppressing means 40 to suppress the shift speed by suppressing the progress of the gear ratio control made by the gear ratio controlling means 31 when the shift speed has got the specified value predetermined or over, wherein the shift speed suppressing means 40 suppresses the shift speed by setting the suppress quantity to suppress the progress of the gear ratio control in accordance with the shift speed.
