Abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a magnetic recording medium at a low cost, which is provided with a magnetic layer consisting of a maghemite thin film containing Co on a general purpose plastic film. SOLUTION: The magnetite thin film containing Co is deposited on a long-length substrate consisting of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), its substrate side is made to run while being brought into contact with a drum whose circumferential surface is cooled and the side of the magnetite thin film containing cobalt is subjected to thermal oxidation treatment to deposit the magnetic layer consisting of the maghemite thin film containing cobalt having 1 to 10 wt% cobalt content.
