Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of an α-sialon sintered compact having a high toughness and hardness, and the α-sialon sintered compact. SOLUTION: The α-sialon sintered compact is manufactured by preparing a molded product made of a mixed powder for producing α-sialon corresponding to the formula: Rx(Si, Al)12(O, N)16(wherein 0.33<x<0.67; and R is a rare-earth element) and sintering this in a nitrogen-containing atmosphere at 1,700-1,950°C under a normal pressure. The mixed powder comprises ≥80 wt.% and <97 wt.% mixture comprising silicon nitride, alumina, aluminum nitride and an oxide of the rare-earth element and ≥3 wt.% and <20 wt.% mixture comprising silica and the oxide of the rare-earth element.
