PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a master cylinder device guaranteeing a smooth motion of a stroke simulator and a smooth operation of the master cylinder itself without upsizing the master cylinder. SOLUTION: A valve body 50 housing the stroke simulator 5 for introducing a brake liquid of a hydraulic pressure chamber 13 in the master cylinder 4 through a simulator passage 6 and securing the requisite stroke of a brake pedal, a tilt valve 7 closing the simulator passage 6 interlockingly with movement of a secondary piston 12 when the control system is in failure, and a spool valve 9 closing the simulator passage 6 on a secondary side of the tilt valve 7 when opening a failsafe valve 2 (when the control system is in failure) and allowing the flow of the brake liquid from the master cylinder 4 to a wheel cylinder 1 is attached externally on a cylinder body 10 of the master cylinder 4 of tandem type connected with the wheel cylinder 1 through the failsafe valve 2.
