Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon nanotube production method which enables the mass production of DWCNT at a high throughput and a low defective formation ratio. SOLUTION: A first electrode 2 having a hollow part 2a and a second rod electrode 3 are provided in a vacuum chamber 1. An inert gas such as a helium gas, a nitrogen gas, or an argon gas is fed into the vacuum chamber 1 to form an atmosphere free from hydrogen and an oxygen gas therein. In this state, an arc discharge is generated between the first electrode 2 and the second electrode 3. The heat generated by the arc discharge suitably stays on the inside surface enclosed by the first electrode 2 to keep the surface temperature of the first electrode 2 at a temperature favorable for the formation of DWCNT 8. Thus, a filamentous DWCNT 8, which starts from a catalyst 6, can be continuously formed without being broken. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
