Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixed-gain semiconductor optical amplifier using the Ranman amplification principle which has a relatively high gain characteristic and a relatively low noise figure without using a pumping light source for a Raman amplifier. SOLUTION: This fixed-gain semiconductor optical amplifier using the Ranman amplification principle comprises an optical fiber 201 having a Raman gain characteristic, and a fixed-gain semiconductor optical amplifier 202 which supplies pumping light to the optical fiber by using laser oscillation that is oscillated by utilizing a mutually asymmetrical DBR grating formed at an input and an output terminal, and then amplifies signal light which is Raman-amplified by the optical fiber.
