PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple direct methanol type fuel cell not requiring any management of moisture for an electrolyte layer, stably operating without permeation of methanol through the electrolyte layer at all time. SOLUTION: The direct methanol type fuel cell operated by the direct supply of methanol as a fuel is provided with a hydrogen ion conduction layer 1 made of hydrogenated fullerene, a first electrode layer 2 having a function of ionizing the hydrogen, arranged at one surface side of the hydrogen ion conduction layer 1, a first metal film 4 making only the hydrogen ion permeate, arranged between the first electrode layer 2 and the hydrogen ion conduction layer 1, a first hydrogen storing and releasing catalyst layer 5 arranged between the first metal film 4 and the hydrogen ion conduction layer 1, a second electrode layer 3 arranged on the other surface side of the hydrogen ion conduction layer 1, a second metal film 6 making only the hydrogen ion permeate, arranged between the second electrode layer 3 and the hydrogen ion conduction layer 1, and a second hydrogen storing and releasing catalyst layer 7 arranged between the second metal film 6 and the hydrogen ion conduction layer 1.
