Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera which has a small processing volume and determines an exposure and gradation characteristics adapted to night scene photographing or the like. SOLUTION: An image processor 4 divides imaging signals for respective pixels outputted from an imaging device 3 into groups of imaging signals corresponding to 64 areas into which an imaging surface of the imaging device 3 is divided, before release and calculates an average value of imaging signals in each group. The number of areas (the number novf of saturated areas) where calculated average values exceed an equivalent to a saturation level is counted. When the counted value is one or more, a gray scale transformation table table B is set, and subject luminance Bv is corrected by +1/2 so that an exposure for photographing is at 1/2 stop under the proper exposure. An image processor 4 sets a gray scale transformation table table A for normal use when the counted value is 0. In this case, exposure correction is not performed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
