Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether file compression is to be performed or not by taking into account of free space of a memory and a data type of a file. SOLUTION: A file management system is constituted of; a high-order I/F routine which receives a request for storing a file to a storage via an application software requested by a user; a storing routine which receives a request for storing a file in the storage from the high-order I/F routine and stores the file to the storage; a compression determination routine which determines whether the file is to be compressed and stored or not; a compression determination table which defines compression/ uncompression in advance from data type of file, and is referred by the compression determination routine in determining whether to compress and store the file or not; and a compression routine to compress the file when the file is determined to be compressed and stored in the storage. When storing the file to the storage, the storing routine makes the compression determination routine check the data type of the file, refer the compression determination table and determine compression/ uncompression of the file. If the compression is determined, the storing routine makes the compression routine compress the file and stores the file to the storage, and if the uncompression is determined, the storing routine stores the file in the storage as it is.
