Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a transflection-type liquid crystal display which exhibits high display quality by improving the contrast ratio when reflection display is performed utilizing ambient light. SOLUTION: In the transflection-type liquid crystal display having a transmission part 12 and a reflection part 13 in a single pixel, the width L1 of black matrices 4a opposed to both side parts of the transmission part 12 is made wider than the width L2 of black matrices 4b opposed to both side parts of the reflection part 13. Thereby, mixing of leakage light from a level difference part 12a on both sides of the transmission part 12 or specular reflection light from a flat part 12b into reflection light from the reflection part 13 can be prevented, and display which is free from glare, is easily visible and has high quality can be realized. The result of evaluation of contrast ratio shows that the contrast ratio in a reflection mode is 74 and the contrast ratio in a transmission mode is 194. Thus, high contrast display can be obtained in both of the reflection mode and the transmission mode. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
