Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To relieve the load on cut and return works in path switching, to shorten the time of the cut and return works, to flexibly perform switching to cut and return and re-switching and to minimize the influence to the existing design system. SOLUTION: In this path switching control method for switching VPs according to a switching instruction including VP (virtual path) information of a switching destination, a VP at a switching destination is newly established (S51) while making a VP at a switching origin remain and switching to the VP at the switching destination is performed while setting both VPs at the switching origin and the switching destination as restorable state (S52). Next, the switching is judged (S53). When completion is established, the VP at the switching origin is abolished (S56) and the completion is canceled, the VP at the switching destination is abolished after cutting and returning it to the VP at the switching origin (S57). In steps S56, S57, a response is returned to the design system as a result of the abolishment Order and new establishment Order. When the switching is postponed, the VP at the switching destination is cut and returned to the VP at the switching origin while holding the VP at the switching destination as the restorable state (S54). After that, the re-switching is also performed (S55, S52). In the case of postponement, no response is returned since the abolishment Order and the new establishment Order are not yet completed.
