Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new compound useful as a material for organic electroluminescent devices capable of giving the organic electroluminescent devices excellent in stability, durability, emission luminance and luminous efficiency, to provide the material comprising the compound, and to provide the organic electroluminescent devices using the material. SOLUTION: The new methine compound is represented by the general formula(I)( wherein, R1and R2are each H or a substituent; L1and L2are each an atomic group constituting a π-electron conjugated system; L2and L3are each a methine group or substituted methine group; and m and n are each 1 or 2 ). The material for organic electroluminescent devices comprises the new methine compound. The organic electroluminescent device is such as to have one or more organic thin film layers including a luminescent layer between a pair of electrodes, wherein at least one of the organic thin film layers contains one or more of this new methine compound.
