PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a digital camera capable of appropriately making advice in accordance with detected facial expression, posture, etc., of an object. SOLUTION: When an advice mode is turned on, the brightness of the object and the distance to the object are measured to obtain the photometric value and measured distance value of the object (step 100 to 104). Next, an exposure control value is set on the basis of the photometric value, an AF control value is set on the basis of the measured distance value, and preliminary photographing is performed (step 106 and 108). Then, a photographed image is subjected to characteristic extraction processing, the shapes of the eyes and mouth of the object are extracted, and a coefficient is calculated on the basis of the extracted shapes (step 110 and 112). Whether the calculated coefficient is not higher than a predetermined prescribed threshold is determined, and if the calculated coefficient is not higher than the prescribed threshold, an advice message for correcting the facial expression of the object is generated and outputted (step 114 and 116).
