Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow accurately detecting a residual quantity of kerosene, etc., in a tank as the operation of photocouplers is stabilized by a slit member. SOLUTION: An oil level detecting apparatus is provided with a float 11 for rising and falling in accordance with a change of an oil level in the tank 1 and an oil level sensor for detecting a signal corresponding to a rising and falling quantity of the float 11, and outputs data of the residual quantity of the oil based on an output detected by the oil level sensor. The oil level sensor comprises the slit member 18 having slits 18a, 18b continuing in a staircase pattern and moving in accordance with rise and fall of the float 11 and a plurality of groups of photocouplers P oppositely disposed so as to put the slit member 18 between and outputting signals corresponding to positions of the slits.
