Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adjust contrast without deteriorating gradations in a display device such as a plasma display. SOLUTION: The digital device such as a plasma display adaptively controlling emission by controlling a drive circuit according to APL of an input signal is made possible to perform fine contrast adjustment without deceasing a digitizes data amount (without deteriorating gradations) by providing the device with APL detection circuit 1 for detecting APL signal of the input signal and an input-output characteristic control circuit 2 for receiving the APL signal and converting an input-output characteristic, and adaptively controlling the number of driving pulse corresponding to the input signal and the number of sub-fields.
