Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing sponge titanium of high grade by efficiently separating impurities in sponge titanium. SOLUTION: In the method for producing lumpy sponge titanium by a Kroll process, in which titanium tetrachloride and metallic magnesium are reduced, from formed lumpy sponge titanium, impurities such as magnesium chloride and unreacted metallic magnesium are evaporated and separated away by performing high temperature heating, preferably, under the reduced pressure (a separating stage), thereafter, disintegration is performed to control the whole quantity or the selective part large in impurities into a granular shape with a grain size of 2 to 50 mm, preferably, of 4 to 19 mm, and, subsequently, heating treatment is carried out under reduced pressure (a reseparating stage). |
