Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an error control method by which number of re-transmitted packet can be reduced in a hybrid automatic request for retransmission (ARQ) where the ARQ and error correction coding are combined. SOLUTION: The communication system having a transmitter and a receiver employs the error control method. The transmitter applies error correction coding to information, divides a code work obtained through the error correction coding into a plurality of packets, and transmits the packets. The receiver measures the reliability of each received packet, makes a retransmission request to the transmitter when the packet satisfies a prescribed condition on the basis of the reliability, synthesizes a plurality of the received packets including the re-transmitted packet and decodes the code word obtained through the synthesis.
