Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically determine a battery in a sulfation state by a main control device and to charge the battery by setting a charge voltage in a high range from a value 20% greater than a normal charge voltage to the highest value the capacity of an insulation type transformer can tolerate. SOLUTION: This battery charging device comprises: a rectifying circuit 2 having a D.C. voltage varying function for converting an A.C. power source 1 into a D.C. power source; a main control device 3 for varying and adjusting the output voltage of the rectifying circuit 2 according to the charge state of a battery; a battery 5 connected to the rectifying circuit 2 through a charging line 4; and a battery charging current detection circuit 6 connected between charging line 4 and the main control device 3 for detecting whether a normal charging current flows or not during charging. When a detection signal indicating that a predetermined battery charging current is not flowing during charging is input from the battery charging current detection circuit 6, the main control device 3 determines that the battery is in a sulfation state, and controls the rectifying circuit 2 by setting its output voltage between a value 20% greater than a normal charge voltage and the highest value the capacity of an insulation type transformer can tolerate.
