Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a mode-locked semiconductor laser which generates a mode- lock pulse laser beam without requiring saturable region, because an super-saturated absorption region is required for generating a mode-locked optical pulse. SOLUTION: A Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser is provided with a gain region 7 containing a plurality of quantum wells, electrodes 1 and 6 for supplying electrons and holes to the gain region 7, and a reflecting section which reflects the light generated in the gain region 7 and is constituted to hold a plurality of optical oscillation modes and to extract a mode-locked optical pulse.
