Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyvinyl ether having a high mol.wt. in good productivity in a short time at a higher industrially advantageous temperature than room temperature by polymerizing a vinyl ether in the presence of a catalyst comprising a heteropolyacid. SOLUTION: This method for producing a polyvinyl ether comprises polymerizing (A) a vinyl ether in the presence of (B) a heteropolyacid (for example, phosphotungstic acid) in an amount of 1 ppm to 3 wt.% based on the component A. The component A is preferably a compound of the formula: CH2=CHOR [R is a (substituted) alkyl, a cycloalkyl, an alkenyl, an aryl, an aralkyl or silyl] (for example, ethylvinyl ether). The component B is preferably a catalyst containing a heteropolyacid in an amount of 30-100 wt.%. The heteropolyacid is a polyacid having a Keggin structure wherein the central atom of the skeleton acid is selected from tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, etc., and the hetero atom is selected from phosphorus, silicon, germanium, titanium, etc.
