Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic memory element and a recording and reproducing method employing the same capable of performing readout in a non- destructive manner and reducing an operating current at writing and readout. SOLUTION: A magnetic resistance effect film 6 is employed which includes a hard magnetic layer 1 in which the magnetization direction does not change at writing and reproducing of information, a first soft magnetic layer 3 disposed on one side of the hard magnetic layer 1 via a first non-magnetic layer 2 and capable of changing the magnetization direction at the writing and reproducing of information, and a second soft magnetic layer 5 disposed on the other side of the hard magnetic layer 1 via a second non-magnetic layer 4 and capable of changing the magnetization direction at the writing and reproducing of information.
