Abstract The method involves providing a regulation signal (r) to a generator (4), by a generator regulator (3) to regulate an output voltage to a preset value. The signal is determined based on comparison of output voltage reference values (S1-S3) with an output voltage actual value (I) of the generator by the regulator. One of the reference values is provided by a superordinate control circuit (6) e.g. battery charge regulator such as integral action controller. A charge condition value of a battery (5) of a motor vehicle is regulated to a preset charge condition value by the battery regulator.
