Summary:The invention concerns a method according to which, extracellular marine mucilage can be hydrolysed. According to the method, the mucilage floating to the surface of the sea and mechanically condensed, are hydrolysed by acidification at a pH as low as around 1 or, maintaining a pH between 3 and 7, utilizing cellulous enzyme. This results in neutralization and eventual denaturation of the cellulous enzyme to a pH greater than 9.2, the mass being discarded in the sea, where it is attacked by microorganisms present in the water.
