Summary:A forage mower comprising a housing (3) defining a hollow interior region (7) with a forward open mouth (8) in which a plurality of cutting elements (10) for cutting the forage are located. A transversely extending conditioning drum (12) located in the hollow interior region (7) transfers cut forage from the cutting elements to a transversely extending transfer auger (17) which transfers the cut forage transversely across the hollow interior region (7) and discharges the cut forage through a sidewardly facing side outlet (18). A closure element (30) pivotally coupled to a top wall (6) of the housing (3) closes a rearward open mouth (25), and is pivotal between a closed state closing the rearward open mouth and an open state defining with a lower transversely extending edge (28) of the open mouth a rearwardly facing discharge outlet (35). The closure element (30) in the open state forms a passageway (39) over the auger (17) to the rearwardly facing discharge outlet (35) through which a sward of the forage material is rearwardly discharged from the forage mower (1). Deflector plates (43,44) deflect the forage material into a relatively narrow sward as the forage material is being discharged through the rearwardly facing discharge outlet (35). <Figure 8>
