Abstract There are provided a device and a method for measuring the thickness of a cloth at the moment when the predetermined pressing force is applied to the cloth more simply, rapidly and accurately. A device for measuring a cloth thickness comprises a stationary part (20) having a base surface (21); a movable member (30) having a pressing end (31) to press a cloth (1) against the base surface (21); a movable member driving mechanism (40) to move the movable member (30) linearly without rotating around itself from an initial position up to an over-pressing position where the pressing end (31) presses the cloth (1) against the base surface (21) with a force exceeding the predetermined pressing force; a load cell (22) for detecting a force with which the pressing end (31) presses the cloth (1) against the base surface (21); and a pulse coder (34) for detecting the space between the base surface (21) and the pressing end (31) at the moment when a force value detected by the load cell (22) reaches the predetermined pressing force while the movable member (30) is being moved from the initial position to an over-pressing position.
