A pivot joint for windows comprises two hinge members 10, 11, having plates 12 for attachment to a window and window frame member 10 having a hollow trunnion 13, which may be lined with nylon, in which are two nylon bearing elements 14 disposed either side of a T shaped bolt 15, the elements having wedge shaped inner ends to accommodate a wedge shaped head 16 of the bolt 15 and a wedge shaped projection 18 on the cylindrical section 17 of the member 10, a nut 20 being provided to adjust the axial distance between wedge parts 16, 18 which displaces radially outward the bearing elements 14 into frictional engagement with the inner surface of trunnion 13. In addition a nylon sleeve 22 is provided between the two hinge members. Furthermore the outer surfaces of the bearing elements may form a surface of general frusto-conical or cylindrical configuration, the internal surface of the trunnion being correspondingly formed.
