Abstract | 926,185. Making metal strip; welding by pressure; shearing; forging. TAYLOR-WINFIELD CORPORATION. July 24, 1959, No. 25429/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In welding the adjacent ends of metal strip sections to form a continuous length of strip, a first strip section and a second strip section are moved relatively to provide an overlap of the leading and trailing ends thereof, the overlap is traversed by welding means to form a weld and the latter is traversed with peening means. A U-shaped welding carriage 14 carrying roller electrodes 32, a welding transformer 36, a gas annealing burner 77 carried from a fluid cylinder 78 and a peening tool 42 reciprocated by a fluid cylinder 44 against an anvil 41, is slidable on a pair of guide rods 12 at right angles to the path of strip travel 15 on a base 10. A shearing - carriage 13 carrying a lower spaced pair of shear blades 24 and an upper spaced pair of blades 25 on a bifurcated member 26 operated by a fluid cylinder 27 is also slidable on the rods 12 and the carriages are connected to pistonrods in fluid cylinders 23 and 31. A clamping device 20 comprising a lower fixed platen 45 and an upper platen 46 carried on rods 48 connected to fluid cylinders 49 is provided on the forward (with respect to the travel of the skip, from left to right in Fig. 2) side of the carriage, and a clamping device 19 comprising a lower platen 51 pivoted on supports on a carriage 53 and a vertically movable upper platen 54 carried on rods 55 connected by linkage 57 to a cylinder 56 on the carriage 53 is arranged at the rearward side of the carriage. The carriage 53 is movable in the direction of strip movement by a cylinder 59 and the platens are movable in the vertical plane by a cylinder 60. On the forward side of the clamp device 20 is provided a trimming means 21 comprising two assemblies, one on each side of the strip each having a grooved roller 66 and a housing 67 carrying a blade in a frame 64 movable by a cylinder 65. Guide rollers carried on cylinders are provided on each side of.the machine. In operation with strip 15 passing through and the machine parts in the positions shown in Fig. 1, when the trailing end begins to pass through the guide roll cylinders move their rolls to locate the strip. The strip is stopped, clamped by actuating cylinders 49 and the trailing end sheared by the forward pair of shear blades. A leading end of a new strip is fed into the machine, is clamped by actuating cylinder 56 and its leading and sheared by the rearward pair of shear blades. The shearing carriage is retracted to left in Fig. 1 and carriage 53 moved by cylinder 59 to bring the leading end towards the trailing end. The cylinder 60 is actuated to pivot the leading end and the ends are overlapped with vertical clearance. Cylinder 60 is again actuated to engage the strip ends. The welding carriage is moved until the electrodes are on the other side of the strips and then returned with the electrodes engaging and welding the ends. The annealing burner directs a flame against the weld to soften it and the peening means hammers the softened weld to reduce its thickness. The trimming assemblies are moved towards the strip which is pulled through and flash is removed therefrom. |
