Summary:A method of manufacturing a termination 20 for a high temperature superconducting (HTS) tape by additive manufacturing using a moving sonotrode comprises applying an end portion 22 of a first HTS tape 24 to a substrate 23, bonding the tape to the substrate using ultrasonic welding, applying a first layer of metal foil 26 to the tape, and bonding the foil to the tape using ultrasonic welding. One or more further layers of metal foil and/or HTS tape may also be applied and bonded by ultrasonic welding. A cooling channel may be created within one or more of the metal foil layers of the termination. Further metal foil layers may have different material properties to the first metal foil. A component (648, Figure 7) such as a fibre optic cable and/or a sensor may be embedded within the layers of metal foil. A method of manufacturing a cable (500, Figure 8) by additive manufacturing is also provided, comprising bonding a plurality of HTS tapes (502, 504, 506, Figure 8) together by ultrasonic welding directly or with one or more layers of metal foil (508, 512, 514, Figure 8) provided between the HTS tapes.
