A formation method comprising arranging a build plate 112 within a build space, building a first object onto the build plate within the build space using an additive manufacturing process, the first object fused to the build plate during the additive manufacturing process and machining at least the build plate to form a component comprising a portion of the build plate and at least a portion of the first object. The building of the object may comprise building the object layer by layer onto the build plate. The process may comprise a powder bed fusion process. The first layer of powder on the build plate may be solidified by an energy beam to fuse it to the build plate.
