Summary:A hair styling appliance includes elements moveable relative to each other, including a first arm and a second arm coupled together for reciprocal movement towards and away from each other, the first and second arms being arranged to receive hair within a region between each other. A sensor arrangement includes at least a first sensor component mounted to at least one of the elements and is configured to sense, using the first sensor component, a change in relative position of at least two of the elements. The sensor arrangement outputs a first signal indicative of an angle and/or a distance between the first arm and the second arm based on the sensed change in relative position.
