Summary:A process plant communication system comprising: a process control network including process control devices which generate process control data; a further plant communication network including processing devices coupled together by a network link, wherein at least one of the processing devices is connected to the process control communication network; a plurality of distributed data pipelines 50, each pipeline 50 defined in a configuration environment to perform, on process control data, a processing operation during runtime using a series of data processing modules. The data processing modules are downloaded from the configuration environment into a plurality of different devices. Each data pipeline includes data collection modules 52, intermediate data processing modules (54, 56, 58) that process data collected by the data collection modules 52 or another intermediate module, and ending data processing modules 59 that produce output data. At least two data processing modules of each pipeline 50 are in different devices within the process control and further plant communication network. The system further comprises a set of higher-level analytic applications connected within the further plant communication network, each of the applications subscribes to data generated by the ending data processing module 59.
