Abstract A controller (12, see fig 1) for an active suspension system 14, the controller configured to: receive an input signal indicative of a direction of travel of a vehicle, determine a target roll characteristic for the vehicle in dependence on the direction of travel, and output the target roll characteristic 40,44 to the active suspension system. The system may be configured to determine at least one target vehicle roll angle, total roll torque or roll torque distribution. The system may also consider an additional vehicle parameter which includes, selected gear, lateral acceleration, yaw rate, roll rate, pitch rate, steering wheel angle and the like. The controller may process data in real time. The invention also relates to a method of controlling an active suspension system within a vehicle, the method comprising receiving an input signal indicative of travel direction, determining a target roll characteristic for the vehicle in dependence on said direction of travel and outputting the target roll characteristic to the active suspension.
