Summary:An apparatus for cooling a fluid includes a cooling medium 32 and a drive mechanism 37. The cooling medium is arranged to accept, in use, an insert 36, such as a carbonated drink can, comprising a fluid contained by a wall. The cooling medium is in thermal contact with a first side of the wall and heat from the fluid flows through the wall to the first side cooling the fluid. The drive mechanism applies a series of shock accelerations to the wall of the insert for a period of time during cooling of the fluid. The cooling medium ideally comprises at least one solid body, or two solid bodies that clamp the insert between them. Ideally the cooling medium is of a temperature below the freezing point or glass transition temperature of at least constituent of the fluid. The shock accelerations may be applied as angular accelerations tangential to the wall of the insert.
