Intumescent material

An electrically conductive intumescent sheet material which may have a thickness of 0.25 to 5 mm, a density of 100 to 500 kg m3, a volume expansion ratio of from 3:1 to 20:1 after 15 minutes at 450°C, a surface resistivity value of from 105 to 2 ohms/square, and/or an insertion loss value of at leas...

Abstract An electrically conductive intumescent sheet material which may have a thickness of 0.25 to 5 mm, a density of 100 to 500 kg m3, a volume expansion ratio of from 3:1 to 20:1 after 15 minutes at 450°C, a surface resistivity value of from 105 to 2 ohms/square, and/or an insertion loss value of at least 10 dB when measured at a frequency of 10 GHz. The material may comprise an inorganic fibre matrix and further comprise an intumescent substance and an electrically conductive substance. The material may be produced by preparing an aqueous suspension of inorganic vitreous fibres, an intumescent substance, an electrically conductive substance and optionally a binder, wet-laying the slurry on to a water pervious support, withdrawing the water from the slurry to produce a sheet and drying the sheet. The material is useful in remotely activated fire protection systems.
