Summary:A method for starting a direct injection internal combustion engine. For a first combustion event under selected conditions during an engine start fuel is injected at least twice, at least one of the injections occurs, at least partially, during a compression stroke. The selected conditions may include engine temperature and fuel injection pressure. There may be a different number of injections for subsequent combustion events, and the timings or the stroke during which the injection takes place may be altered, eg the first injection may be during the intake stroke. The combustion events may be during cranking, and during a warm restart different timings or number of injections may be used.
