Summary:A superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) device comprises a coil (1, figure 1) wound from a high-temperature superconducting cable comprising high-temperature superconducting means 14 surrounded by insulation comprising an inner layer 20 of semiconducting material electrically connected to the superconducting means 14, an outer layer 21 of semiconducting material at a controlled potential, and an intermediate layer 22 of solid polymeric insulating material. The SMES device may be used in a high voltage system.
