Sound waves (14) generated by absorption of the optical beam are detected by a transducer (16). The detector and optical beam guide are housed in a body-part shaped sensor head device (figures 2 to 16), and are preferably not co-linear with one another. Analysis of the transducer output enables calculation of the desired parameter, e.g. blood glucose concentration.
