The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1076248/C2/1> wherein R1 is a possibly substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, X is H, halogen or alkyl, Y is dialkylamino or alkoxy and n is 1-4, excepting the compounds where X is H, R1 is Me and Y is 4-MeO or 4-Me2N. The compounds are prepared by acylating the corresponding thiophenol with a carboxylic acid, anhydride or halide, or with a ketene, providing the group R1C=O.ALSO:Weed control compositions for combatting both terrestrial and aquatic plants contain a compound of formula <FORM:1076248/A5-A6/1> where R1 is a possibly substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, X is H, halogen or alkyl, Y is dialkylamino or alkoxy and n is 1-4, in admixture with solid carrier, or liquid carrier and surface active agent. These compounds may otherwise be applied alone. Specified formulations are solutions, suspensions, emulsions, powders, pastes and granulates.
