Abstract The device has a head rest with an electronic control unit executing a driving control to drive the head rest towards a front by activating a motor in response to a proceed signal from a pre-collision system-electronic control unit. The unit terminates the driving of the head rest by stopping the motor due to a positional relation between a passenger head and the head rest to attain a preset position relation, from signals provided from a capacitive proximity sensor. The unit maintains the motor in a stop state during a preset time after the driving control drives the headrest. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an active head restraint.
