Process of regeneration of metathesis catalysts comprises rhenium, molybdenum or tungsten compounds on a porous refractory oxide support and an organometallic promoter. The promoter comprises an alkyl tin or lead compound of general formula, (R')4M. M = tin or lead; and R' = 1 - 40C aliphatic hydrocarbyl. The process comprises extraction of the promoter, calcination of the catalysts, and the treated and a re-impregnation stage of the catalyst by the tin or lead-containing promoter. An Independent claim is also included for the metathesis process of olefins. On décrit un procédé amélioré de régénération de catalyseurs de métathèse qui comprennent un composé de rhénium, de molybdène ou de tungstène sur un support poreux constitué par un oxyde réfractaire, ayant un caractère acide, neutre ou basique, et un promoteur organométallique constitué par un complexe alkyle de l'étain ou du plomb. La régénération comprend une extraction sélective du promoteur organométallique suivie par une calcination et une réimprégnation par le même promoteur.
