Summary: | Process comprises (a) catalytically hydrogenating the feed to convert the butenes and isobutenes into butane and isobutane, and (b) selectively hydrocracking the product to convert the butane into ethane and propane. The hydrocracking catalyst comprises 0.1-10 wt. % of Ru, Rh, Ir and/or Os on a support comprising Al2O3, SiO2, ThO2, ZrO2 and/or MgO. Hydrogenation is pref. effected in 2 stages: (1) in the liq. phase at 40-120 degrees C and 10-40 bars with an H2/hydrocarbon molar ratio of 1-2; (2) in the vapour phase at 60-140 degrees C and 10-40 bars. Hydrocracking is pref. effected with an Ph/Al2O3 catalyst at a temp. of 220-320 degrees C, a pressure of 10-40 bars, an H2/n-butane ratio of 1.2-2.5, and a WHSV of 0.5-2. The hydrocracking step is highly selective, giving very low yields of CH4, high butane conversions (e.g. 85-90%) and low isobutane conversions (e.g. 5%).
